Buying a new air conditioner is a long-term decision, and the right choice keeps a room comfortable for years while keeping your electricity bill in check. Before you shop, it helps to understand a few basics so you are not paying for cooling power you do not need, or buying a unit too small for the space.
Match the BTU to your room size
Cooling capacity is measured in BTU (or horsepower in everyday terms). A unit that is too small will run constantly and never quite cool the room, while one that is too large cycles on and off and wastes energy. As a rough guide, a small bedroom suits a 1.0 to 1.5 HP unit, while a large living room may need 2.0 HP or more.
Inverter or non-inverter?
Inverter units adjust their compressor speed to hold a steady temperature, so they use noticeably less power over time and run more quietly. They cost a little more upfront but usually pay for themselves through lower bills, especially if the aircond runs for many hours a day.
What else to check
- Energy rating — more stars means lower running cost.
- Brand support and spare-part availability in Malaysia.
- Noise level, particularly for bedrooms.
- Warranty terms on the compressor and parts.
